July 24, 2020

Dear Union Elementary School District Families, Employees, and Community,

Flexibility and patience have been the two words that I have used repeatedly during our school closure, and again as we plan for reopening.  Thank you for demonstrating both. I’m calling upon us once again to remain dedicated to following those principles in the weeks and months to come.

We are a just a little over a week away from starting on on-line learning for the 2020-2021 school year, and just 24 days away from the tentative August 17, 2020, in-person opening date that Governor Ducey originally established for return. Yesterday, the Governor and Superintendent Hoffman released an Executive Order with new guidelines for re-opening our physical spaces to students. While we are still in the process of reviewing all the guidelines against our safe re-opening plan, there is information about the in-person learning model to share.

  1. The State is not going to set a new date for return to in-person learning; instead, the Arizona Department of Health Service, Arizona Department of Education and each County Health Department will be establishing a data-based framework for local districts to use for determining when to open and possibly close due to COVID-19.
  2. This framework will be available to districts by August 7, 2020.
  3. Union’s Governing Board will meet on August 13, 2020, to review this data and determine if we will start In-Person learning on August 17, 2020.
  4. Employees and families will be notified on August 14, 2020, if we are re-opening for the In-Person learning model on August 17, 2020.

Given the continued uncertainty, and the wide-spread community transmission of COVID-19, we must use this time to prepare ourselves and all families, for the possibility of continuing on-line learning. That is why we have planned our phased re-opening. Parents, please ensure you have made a learning model selection, and that you make yourself available on August 3rd or August 4th, for a parent-teacher meeting, and to pick up materials for learning.  Teachers will be calling to set up your appointment time.

We expect that the 2020-2021 school year will be one of consistent change. We have prepared for multiple contingencies for learning and are so excited to see students, whether in person or on-line.  Your team will continue to use strategies to keep us all safe, healthy and continue learning.  As we start our learning journey for 2020-2021, please help us slow the COVID-19 spread by wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, and washing your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds.

Additionally, if you are sick, have someone in your household with COVID-19, or have tested positive yourself, please stay home, seek medical care & get healthy!

As has been the case throughout our school closure, things change rapidly. I am certain this will continue. We will keep you updated. Please update your emergency contact information with your school and/or department. If you have any questions, or need additional support, please do not hesitate to contact your school or the district office.
